| Pah!! I finally am starting to see my way of the friggin' slump I'd been in with my studio work. Though recently I'd started and completed two or three clay sculptures (will be shown on here next time), I not been able to get myself going on completing the fifth and final painting I had been working on for a series.
Lemme explain...
When I was invited to take part in a group showing at the Dryer Gallery at NTID in Rochester, NY, I knew the exhibition theme was going to be based on 'mythology'. I asked the curator for her interpretation of this theme and she'd said she was leaving it open to the artists involved in the show - which meant we'd be able to come up with a concept as long as they were cohesive with the rest of our work.
After a bit of thinking on this, I came up with the idea of doing a small series based on my family with individual portraits of the members - and yes, incluing yours truly in a self portrait. But it had to be a bit more to it than just faces or a representive of my blood relations. At this time, I'd become intrigued with bones and after encountering a really (and I mean, REALLY) fabulous deer skull complete with antlers and all.. I mean.. God.. it was beautiful and spoke to me.. reached out and grabbed me. This was the depth I needed to anchor my concept.
With each portrait I did, a skull was included in the study, in various situations.. some skulls were held while others merely were used as a base. Among the skulls I'd used so far, there is one of a cow skull (dont ask me how I got THAT - its another story) and a snapping turtle skull.. (honest.. that's yet another story in itself and one in my poccession for many years)... then there's the deer skull which was given to me by my niece and nephew in law when I stayed at their New Mexicio home during last Christmas. (They only live there part of the year. Oh yes.. I also included a couple of exotic birds in the paintings.. three skulls and two birds..
They all represent (for me) the dynamics of what today's families are made of. The skulls are symbolic in a way that pertains to a life having been lived and formed the foundation of a life.. and thus, the foundation of a family unit. Bone of bone, flesh of flesh and blood of blood... and when everything else is gone, only the bones are left to mark what once had been. The birds provide a quiet contrast to the bones and pertains to what we know as the fabric of life. Colored threads are woven into a life pattern, providing a certain predictibility and stability into the everyday life. Again.. flesh of the flesh..
Maybe if I had a more varied collection of skulls, I'd be able to leave out the birds entirely.. but hey you take what you can get, right?
Anyway...
Here's a pencil sketch of the final model (based on an 'on the scene sketch on one of my nieces)
Once the exhibition is done and over with (the opening reception is on Sept 22, 2006), I will slip a few jpgs of the paintings in here for all to gawk at (and perhaps make an offer...? *grins*)
Yup.. I have no shame.. :D

| As some of you may know, I'm an artist and do a lot of clay sculpture at this time. Thought I'd show one of my recent pieces I'd just completed. Just keep in mind that this
photo does not display the entire sculpture - thanks to the 'policy' set by photobucket. Even clay nudes are 'taboo' in there, can ya beleive? I had some photos of one of my works showing all of the piece and they stepped in and stamped it out. *sigh*...
Anyway.. its in the drying process now and when it's bone dry, off to the kiln it goes to be fired. Then the surface will be finished with a mixture of acrylic paint, wax and shoe polish.. yeah I said shoe polish :) Once it's all done, its sprayed with a poly coat to retain and protect the surface.. and put on the market. Anyone interested?
